As a young dancer there was nothing better than the feeling of being on stage. Standing in the wings with all of those nerves and excitement rolled into one feeling. The lights go out and you run out into position and lights up.
That moment right there is where the nerves dissolve and you turn into the performer. To those of you that haven’t had this experience, it’s like you turn into a more confident version of yourself instantly.
The stage is a place to explore and express in a way we don’t feel comfortable doing in our day to day lives but this is only possible if the production of the event/show has this in mind for the performers from the start.
If the children/performers are unprepared, stressed or worried in any way about what they are about to do then the freedom they could feel on stage to explore and express will not reach its fullest level and may even leave them feeling overwhelmed and exposed.
At studio 19 we spend 6 months preparing all aspects of our shows to ensure the students feel confident and prepared to go out on stage and feel free to show off their hard work and have the time of their lives.
This preparation is to ensure students feel supported and parents are clear and confident with every part of event process.
All information like drop off and pick up times, costumes links, hair, running orders, rehearsal dates and times and any other necessary information is put into one online handbook for parents to access at any time.
All rehearsals finish on time, is a rule our teachers are told before any full runs. As parents ourselves we know just how irritating it is to be asked to pick up your child at a specific time to then be stood waiting another 45 minutes in the car park.
With over 450 students and multiple different shows running over the same weekend, clear information has been the key to putting on successful shows for 10 years.
The secret to putting on a successful show that leaves the students with lasting memories and unforgettable feelings beside clear information is all about pressure.
The hard work and preparation has to be done in the studio, with well timed rehearsals and full runs to show the students that they are ready and to encourage them for the months leading up, to put the work in now and not wait for the stage to go full out.
We make sure that all of our show pieces are finished and cleaned well in advance to showing up to the theatre.
By doing this work we can go into the show with zero pressure on the performers, the hard work has been done, it’s too late to change anything.
Now we just go out there and show the audience how hard we have worked and feel free in the knowing that you have done everything you can to be prepared. Now is the time to put that to the test.
No pressure doesn’t mean the students won’t feel any pressure, but they won’t be feeling it from us as teachers!
We build a culture in the studio that encourages mistakes to be made and let our students know daily that mistakes are there to teach us and show us where the next area of improvement is.
This is also true when on stage. Mistakes will happen and that’s okay. Do it with a smile on your face, forget about it and move on.
At Studio 19 we make sure our students know how proud we are of the work they have put in and when they get into the theatre our job is to make their job as easy as possible. How?Everything backstage is organised and choreographed with precision, creating a calm and positive feel that enables the students to get out on stage feeling relaxed and supported!
Being on stage when you are prepared and relaxed is one of the greatest feelings in the world!
